Man’s Mother Dislikes Baby Name Choice — Says It Would Be Better For A Horse

Having a child comes with a lot of responsibilities, but it also comes with plenty of exciting moments. One of the most exciting parts about having a child is picking out a name for them. Some people choose traditional names while others pick names that have a special meaning to them. What the case may be, it’s important to understand that not everyone will like the name you land on, and some people may even make fun of the name.

A father-to-be by the name of Devin realized this after he and his wife decided to adopt a child together. They had been going back and forth on what name they should choose for their expected son, and finally landed on a few that they felt great about. The names were definitely unique, but the soon-to-be parents felt like they had amazing meanings.

The couple was excited to tell Devin’s parents that they had finally picked out a few names, but their excitement was short-lived. His parents immediately began making fun of their choices and laughed at them. His mom even went as far as to say that the name would be better suited for a horse than a child.

The father-to-be was furious and his wife was so upset that she burst into tears, so the pair decided to not speak to Devin’s parents anymore. The man went to Reddit in October 2020 to ask if he was wrong for refusing to speak to his parents over the situation at hand, and asked users for advice.

“I want to preface this by saying that I have always had an interest in philosophy and mythology,” Devin wrote at the beginning of his Reddit post. He called himself a “name nerd” and expressed how excited he and his wife were as they were in the process of adopting and picking out a name for their future child. Devin’s parents were ecstatic to find out they were adopting and were just as excited to hear the names the couple had picked out as the couple was to share them. However, everything came to a head one weekend when the couple finally shared the name they had decided on.

“When I first read the name Nikiforos one and a half years ago, I knew it would be that of my future child,” Devin said. However, his parents were not on board. “My mother freaked out and said she might name a horse that, but not a child,” he explained. “We were very upset by this comparison.” Devin’s mother then criticized him for the name choice saying that it was unfit for a boy, since he and his wife were planning on adopting a boy, and continued making fun of the name choice.

“Then she tried to imitate horse sounds and stomped up and down the stairs,” Devin said. “My father was suspiciously quiet while my mother was ridiculing our personal choices.” Chiming in, Devin’s wife explained how much she loves French culture and felt like the name Nicephore — pronounced like “niece four” — would be a better pick compared to Nikiforos. It wasn’t, and Devin’s mom continued to ridicule the couple and the rest of their name choices, making Devin’s wife cry.

The father-to-be explained, “Because I got pretty close to studying archeology in college, I think I know a little bit more about these things than most people do and am somewhat entitled to pick a big name with a lot of history for my child.” Devin then explained that his name wasn’t that common either, and plenty of people called him Kevin or Steven by mistake when he was growing up, but he was still optimistic about his name choice. “America is such a diverse country that I really don’t think this is an issue,” Devin said.

He brought up his second favorite name: Didaskalos, which means teacher. It meant a lot to the couple since Devin’s wife is an elementary school teacher, but it still didn’t go over well with his parents, and they immediately burst out laughing. Devin and his wife had had enough and decided to leave his parent’s house and have refused to speak to them since.

Reddit users were quick to tell Devin that he was wrong for not speaking with his parents, and even more wrong for wanting to give his child a name that would most likely lead to issues down the road. One user commented, “As an elementary school teacher, your wife should especially know how brutal kids are to each other. With a name like Nikiforos, you’re pretty much signing your kid up for constant teasing throughout school.” Another user said, “If the adult who willingly is choosing this name is in tears over some heavy handed criticism, why do they expect a child to embrace it?”
