College team make history with performance of ‘Smooth Criminal’

The Tiger Girls dance team from Louisiana State University (LSU) captivated the internet with their championship-winning performance of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” at the Universal Dance Association (UDA) Hip Hop Competition, often dubbed the “Super Bowl of Dance.” This extraordinary showcase marked their fourth title win and solidified their place in dance history.

At the 2024 event in Orlando, Florida, the Tiger Girls delivered a mesmerizing tribute to Michael Jackson, seamlessly blending traditional moves with modern interpretations of the King of Pop’s iconic choreography. Dressed in white satin suits, glittering ties, Nike sneakers, and classic fedoras, the team looked as though they had stepped straight out of a Michael Jackson music video. Their flawless execution of “Smooth Criminal,” from Jackson’s 1988 Bad album, honored the chart-topping song’s intricate and physically demanding dance moves.

Head coach Kandace Hale revealed that she immediately embraced choreographers Carsen Lowe and Sammy McFadden’s idea for the routine, calling the song a “classic” and noting the team’s deep admiration for Jackson. Fans were equally impressed, praising the Tiger Girls’ “untouchable precision” and calling their performance “un-freaking-believable.” With a dedicated team and unwavering commitment, the Tiger Girls continue to aim for excellence.
